Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
