The Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
